Well, bridal season for 2011 has slowed down considerably. Although there are always beautiful weddings scattered throughout the winter and early spring months, the every week intensity of weddings is taking a break for us and our fellow wedding pros. So, we won't be posting a Local Wedding Wednesday every week until Spring 2012. But, we'll definitely highlight any gorgeous Local Weddings that come our way!

Fresh Idea :: Those you Love

To me, weddings are all about love and family. Ideally, your wedding day is spent surrounded by those you love and who love you, whether they are family by blood or by choice. Too often, some of our loved ones have been lost before our wedding days arrive. Here are some ideas in which you can appropriately honor and remember loved ones who are with you in spirit, but not in body.

Grandma's Jewelry. Wear a brooch from a grandma, aunt, or another special lady on your gown, in your hair; or use it to decorate your bouquet. I hung a small locket that had once belonged to my great-grandmother from my garter on my wedding day.

Vintage Photos. Frame wedding or other photos of generations past for your guest book table.

Candy Jars or Other Containers. Did anyone in your family collect milkglass vases, flower figurines, or perhaps John Deere memorabilia? If it is something you and your groom also enjoy, how about using those containers for your candy buffet. A great stylist or planner can make even Grandpa's tractor collection look like vintage glam in a rustic reception setting like a barn or rustic setting.

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking; we'd love to brainstorm with you about more!

Besides fabrics and fashion, one of my favorite elements of a wedding's design is floral. I love fresh flowers at a wedding, and think the moment when the florist makes a delivery and the bouquets are handed out to the wedding party is a highlight of wedding preparations!

Reception Inspiration

For this weekend's Wedding Walk, Rachel & Tami designed a glam table, using vintage china from a local vendor (ask us!), a beautiful silk dupioni fabric we found, and gorgeous vintage milk-glass pieces.

Of course, our friend Barry Jeter, of Procedo Events always shows up with the most wonderful floral displays. He did it again with this very tall white vase, filled with a variety of gorgeous blooms.

The cake was designed by Second Floor Bakery to follow the vintage glam theme and the gold trim on the vintage china.

By now, you've probably been to a wedding or two lately with a photo booth.

Well, it's still a fresh idea and lots of fun, especially for guests of the wedding to help pass time while the bridal party is having photos taken.

The key to a successful photo booth is a quality set-up and camera, as well as fun props and someone who can give directions.

Here are some photos from a recent EVENTS by September's Bride wedding. Walcott Imaging is one of our very favorite vendors. Not only are Rob & Lisa great wedding photographers, their photo booth set-up is one of the best!

This past weekend I was honored to attend a beautiful wedding at The Felt Estate in Saugatuck. The Estate is a wonderful venue for a wedding both with the Water Garden for the ceremony and the Mansion for the reception. This bride decided to do things a little more casual and nontraditional due to the layout of the Mansion.

In order to assist the guests throughout the evening and all of the activities scheduled, the couple put a "guide" in their programs which also included a map of the property. As a guest myself, I absolutely appreciated this! Included in this guide were starting times for the dinner buffet and the couples first dance and a map marked with the locations for things such as the candy buffet, the bars and the photo booth.

When you rent The Felt Estate for your event you have access to the entire Mansion. Spreading your event throughout all of the rooms is a great way for your guests to tour the property at their leisure. This weekend's couple also included a Felt Mansion Scavenger Hunt in the program to encourage guests to tour the property and read the history mentioned around the house.

Congratulations again Julie and Brian! I LOVED all of your thoughtful details on your big day.

I'm a chocolate girl! In fact, most of us here at September's Bride are self-proclaimed chocoholics. So, it was only natural that I become friends with Rudy, the "Fudge Guy", who sells the most delicious fudge at Holland's Farmer's Market on Wednesdays and Sundays.

A few weeks ago, I realized I needed to introduce Rudy and his Fantabulous Fudge Company to our blog readers & brides. I realized this when he mentioned that he does a great business selling fudge for wedding favors and then mentioned his newest flavor, Lemon Shortbread.

In the prettiest shade of yellow and with a light citrusy, but totally satisfying (even to a chocoholic) flavor, this fudge would be the perfect delicacy to serve to your wedding guests.

Last week I shared a link to Elisabeth and Kris's wedding via Mindy Leigh Photography. If you have not seen it yet check out the blog post here. Today I wanted to share more of the details with you. Elisabeth was a very hands on DIY bride and spent the last year pulling together all of her amazing ideas. She wanted their wedding day to be bright, cheerful and fun, which reflects both of their personalities perfectly.

Elisabeth knew what she wanted her invitations and paper products to look like but could not find them anywhere. So she ended up sharing the idea with a grapic designer friend and they turned out perfect!

At Picket Fence Floral in Holland you can have a party and put together your own bouquets, corsages, etc. Liz, her mom, grandma and bridesmaids spent Friday afternoon putting everything together and had a blast doing it. On the day of the wedding Liz told me that she was much more attached and sentimental about her bouquet because of creating it herself.

The family brought in flower pots of many colors to create a garden on the stage.

The bride created these fabric flower wreaths to great the guests as they entered the sanctuary.

The bride found the perfect embellishments to add to her escort cards.

The centerpieces were each an eclectic grouping of jars an vases filled with bright garden stems. The brides grandmother made the green gingham squares for the glassware to set upon. The couple used fun pictures of them together for the table numbers.

Main Street Sweets in Zeeland brought in the amazing candy buffet. A friend of the couple created the wooden stands to hang the "CANDY BAR" letters from. We added a few framed pictures of the couple as well as green linens to make the buffet a focal point in the room.

This four tier cake was from Second Floor Bakery in Holland. The fondant flowers and gingham ribbon went perfectly with the rest of the decor. The groom also had a Michigan Stadium grooms cake!

Liz and Kris and their entire bridal party were so much fun. As you can tell in this photo they were not afraid to be crazy, one of the couples even rode in the reception on roller blades!

The first time I talked to June on the phone I knew we would get along together fabulously. She is so fun to talk with and her wonderful personality comes across in every word. With June and Joe living on the East Coast it was a few months until I was able to meet June face to face, of course she was even more lovely in person. June and Joe's South Haven wedding was beautiful and their love for each other was so apparent. It was an honor meeting both of their families and getting to know such a wonderful couple.

June's father was the sweetest guy, we just loved him!

I had to include this one of June's mother, she wore the most fabulous hair piece.

After the ceremony June and Joe rode away in this vintage 1947 Nash Ambassador.

The little flower girls were so adorable and were in awe of the bride and groom.

This last image is perfect to show the personalities of the bridal party. Congratulations June and Joe, your wedding was so much fun and it was a pleasure to be a part of it!

Jar Candle Escort Cards

Make a Weekend Out of It

In Michigan we have many gorgeous cities and towns that draw brides and grooms to hold their nuptials here. In many cases, these venues are chosen because of sentimental reasons, childhood memories or family vacation homes. The Michigan lake shore has a large array of beach rental houses, resorts, lodges and banquet facilities to choose from. Many of these venues have on-site lodging available for you and your guests as well, making them ideal for entertaining large groups.

A major question that arises when hosting guests for a destination wedding is how much do you need to entertain them? Your location will help to determine how many pre-scheduled events you will need to host. If you are within walking or short driving distance to a nice town area that your guests can go into to eat or shop, you will not need to host every main meal. If the venue you are using for the wedding has restaurants or is a Bed and Breakfast this will help as well. Hosting a casual welcome dinner the night before the wedding for any guests that have already arrived is a great idea. For any of your closest friends and family sticking around the next morning, I suggest having a small intimate brunch, even possibly using this opportunity to open any gifts you may have received.

On the day of the wedding most guests will be on their own earlier in the day due to the wedding itself being such a large event that. This is a great time for them to adventure out and see why you chose this area for your big day. Putting together a welcome basket for the guests is a very courteous touch, including favorite restaurants, shops, and locations for them to check out; include a map and mark these locations. Another favorite thing of mine is to include locally made products in these baskets, such as wine, fudge or even fresh produce.

When planning a destination wedding, do not feel that you need to have an itinerary for your guests’ every moment. Plan a couple of things as a group and then give them freedom to explore on their own. By doing this they may make memories of their own in your wedding location and might consider it in the future for their own special event!

I have mentioned many times before that I love Michigan because of the amazing seasons we have. I need to follow that up by confessing that spring is one of my favorites. The reason behind this is one that many would disagree with...rain. I LOVE rain and thunderstorms. Although rain is not ideal for a wedding, it does make for some fun pictures, especially with a cute umbrella!

And, of course, it would not be Spring in West Michigan without Tulip Time!!

Earth Day Wedding

Today we are celebrating Earth Day. All over the media people are giving tips for making your life more eco-friendly. Reduce, reuse, recycle are words we hear every day. Even the wedding industry is promoting "green" weddings; using 100% recycled paper for your invitations, donating leftover food instead of throwing it away and even buying rings made from recycled precious metals.

I have always loved the idea of gift trees as favors. The Arbor Day Foundation has a wonderful program for ordering individually packaged trees. They even offer custom labels so you can put your wedding information on them. Trees can be shipped year round and planted indoors if the weather isn't conducive to outdoor planting right away.

Trends I Love - Guys With Style

Not every wedding is a good match with wearing the traditional black tux and not every guy wants to wear one quite frankly. Grooms these days (with a little help from their significant other, I'm sure) are finding their own style on their wedding day. Whether it be from a funky tie or vest, a colorful pair of socks or even a completely unique look head to toe, it is being done. One fun idea I've seen done was that the groom, best man, groomsmen and ushers all wore different striped neck ties in the wedding colors depending on their "title". And then there is the casual outdoors or beach wedding that a nice sweater or dress shirt and khakis may flow.

Trends I Love - Non-Traditional Tables

Looking for a unique way to seat your guests? Sick of the traditional round banquet tables? Brides these days are getting creative in EVERY aspect of their planning and this includes the type of tables they use. Depending on the size of your guest list and the layout of your venue you have many options. For smaller weddings, one long table utilizing both sides would make the dinner feel very intimate and personal.

If you either don't have the space in your venue or just want to break it up a little, consider doing several rectangular guests tables.

Or if you are looking for something very unique and you have ample space to use, check out these serpentine tables. Now wouldn't that get the guests talking! And very memorable as well.

But of course, there is nothing to say you can use a little of everything! I love this look...

Sunday Wedding - The New Wedding Trend?

Sunday Wedding - The New Wedding Trend?

If you listen to the oldies station or your like me representing the crowed over fifty, you might remember the song sung by Pattie Page intitled: “Never On A Sunday.” It goes like this:

Oh, you can kiss me on a Monday a Monday a Monday
is very very good
Or you can kiss me on a Tuesday a Tuesday a Tuesday
in fact I wish you would
Or you can kiss me on a Wednesday a Thursday a
Friday and Saturday is best
But never ever on a Sunday a Sunday a Sunday
cause that's my day of rest

I can remember the time when you could not do your grocery shopping or stop for a burger and fries in West Michigan on a Sunday because businesses were closed.

Changes in the evangelical community accomidates for Sunday Weddings as well. It doesn't interfere with church like it used to. More churches have alternate services so that people don't have to choose between the wedding and going to church.

But now, for the best or the worst depending on your point of view - Sundays are now an option for a wedding celebration and while Saturdays remain the most popular day for most wedding celebrations populatity can often cause some hurdles for couples.

Never on a Sunday – why not? Sunday is becoming more and more popular as an “off-the-beat-path” day to celebrate one's love.

Saturday is often a very difficult day on which to book a wedding. Reservations need to made years in advance for some venues. Also, venues, caterers and other services that may be involved on the big day also often come with hefty prices on Saturday's because of competition. After all, the wedding industry is a $50 billion industry, according to statistics from the Association for Wedding Professionals International.

Well, what might be some advantages of checking another day besides Saturday for your wedding?

1. Most couples have their wedding on a Friday or Saturday. That leaves most select locations to have a limited amount of events per season, and a long waiting list. Many a beginner planner or bride to be are shocked to find out that most of their favorite venue picks have a waiting list a mile long and are booked not months, but sometimes years in advance!

2. More and more wedding providers are offering their services on Sunday, and at a discounted rate. An empty wedding or banquet hall on a Sunday afternoon would love to book that room for increased revenue. The classic wedding season is 4 months long from June to end of October, allowing for 32 prime days for weddings (Friday and Saturday). By booking Sunday weddings, wedding providers have increased their possible revenue flow by 16 days, or 33.33 %.

3. Save a thousands with a Sunday Wedding! With Sunday weddings not in demand, the wedding couple or planner is more likely to successfully negotiate a discounted price for a wedding location. Can't afford that beautiful wedding hall on the lake? Well, maybe now you can. That place that was booked for two years straight-- they can accommodate a Sunday wedding much sooner, and chances are, much cheaper. So, please consider a Sunday wedding. The competition for Sunday weddings is not as fierce which leaves you, the consumer, with more leverage when negotiating a cheaper price. Use this to your advantage when budgeting or making a budget.

To sum up, when you are deciding on a wedding day, don't automatically nix Sunday. It could be a better alternative to a Friday evening wedding, or even a Saturday wedding. Trends I Love - Lovely Linens

I've already said that one thing I would change about my wedding was the photography. If I had to pick something else I would change it would be that we didn't use anything but standard linens, chocolate floor length linens would have looked AMAZING under my centerpieces. If you want your tables to make a statement but don't want to go over board with your centerpieces, use linens. Gorgeous linens make all the difference, they can help add depth and texture to your overall look.

There are so many great ways to incorporate color using different linens. Full table linens, runners, overlays, and of course selecting a coordinating look for the napkins or chair ties.

Love this idea too! This couple used maps to cover their tabletops, it helped to incorporate their theme of travel and flight. No one says that tables have to be covered with fabric!

Do not be afraid to think outside of the box a little when it comes to your decor. If you want that unique look but don't know where to start or need help with ideas, give us a call we would love to help.

Too Late to Hire a Planner?

When you hear the words Wedding Planner you may think that they come in and plan your wedding from beginning to end. In some cases that is true, but a lot of the time Planners/Coordinators are hired to assist a bride that is overwhelmed or just needs some additional assistance on the wedding day.

It is never too late in the process to hire someone to help you. It is normal for couples to start feeling a lot of pressure from the wedding in last fews months. Bringing a Coordinator on board to help you finalize the details of the decor, review and confirm your vendor contracts and run the logisitcs on the day of can relieve a lot of stress from everyone involved. At EVENTS by September's Bride we include unlimited email and phone calls with all of our packages, this ensures communication but also helps the brides when she has questions on anything from etiquette to seating charts.

In the West Michigan area there are many brides that are DIY savy and are super hands on. This is wonderful during the planning process but can be a downfall on the wedding day. On your wedding day you should not be worrying that everything is being taken care of from decor set up to vendor arrivials. A bride and her entourage should be getting their hair done and having a wonderful breakfast or luncheon. This is where a Day Of Coordinator could assist, we come in and do all of the set up, run the logisitcs for the day and stay until the clean up from the reception is complete.

So even whether your wedding is 18 months or 2 weeks away, consider hiring a Coordinator to help you throughout the process and on your big day. The investment in your sanity is definitely worth it :)

Back Yard Wedding? Consider This...

When having a backyard or off-site wedding reception there are a lot of details that need consideration. Hosting an event at an unusual location, or one that is not normally the site of special events, you may need to bring in multiple rental items including tents, tables, chairs and possibly electric.

Here are a few things to consider:

Do you have enough space for the guests you are invited to be out of the elements if needed? If not, you will need to rent a tent or structure to sheild from the hot or cold depending on the time of year.

Does the venue you are using have enough restrooms to accomodate your guests? If they are hooked up to a septic tank can they handle this amount of use? If not, you will need to bring in restrooms, either in the form of a Port-o-Jon or something like a Royal Restroom.

Are you planning on having a DJ or other music that will need electric? These vendors may have specific wattage or outlet needs, a generator may be required.

Will parking be an issue? If so, consider hiring a valet service to work your event. Talk to a local church or business about using their parking lot for the cars and have the valets drive them back and forth.

Are there neighbors on either side of the venue that will complain of noise from your event? If so, let them know in advance of the event so they can leave if needed, OR invite them to the party!

Some religions will not marry couples outside of a church, talk to your pastor or clergy member to find out their regulations.

Will there need to be a lot of work done of the landscaping/yard to get it in "wedding worthy" condition?

Nothing is lovelier than an intimate backyard wedding. But before you jump in with both feet, make sure you have considered all that will need to be done and weigh that against the benefits. If you are willing to put in the time and effort you will not regret the decision.

This week I am featuring Bianca from Chic Chair Covers. Bianca and I met the summer of 2009 and immediately hit if off, we even both have Boxers! Here is a little about CCC.

Chic Chair Covers, LLC (CCC) offers white banquet style chair covers and organza sashes in a variety of different colors. The owner, Bianca Tompsett, runs the business from her home in Allendale where she meets with clients to see the chair linens and find the perfect sash color to compliment the event's decor.

Bianca, a graduate of Ferris State University's College of Business, has a passion for weddings and events in general. With five years of experience working directly with events, from planning to advertising, she knew she wanted to have her hand in events in some way. After planning her own wedding in 2007, she realized the wedding industry is where she wanted to focus her energy.

"I've been a guest at far too many receptions where the couple uses chair linens, but the sashes are on the floor by the end of the night. One thing you'll notice about our high quality organza sashes is that they're slightly thicker than most sashes, so it stays on the chair and holds it form better than others," Tompsett said.

Bianca offers many services for free that other chair linen providers often charge extra for. She personally sets up the chair covers with her team, as well as steams them on-site, for no extra charge. She takes pride in the finished product, as it adds a lot to the ambiance of the room.

"I can remember my wedding day distinctly. One thing I definitely didn't want to deal with was setting up chair covers and sashes. I just wanted to focus on getting ready, staying relaxed, and having a good time. So, we ended up paying someone to do the set-up for us....which added up quickly! That is why I opted to offer free set-up and steaming of all chair covers and sashes. That way the room will look crisp and clean, and the bride doesn't have to lift a finger," Tompsett said.

When she's not working she enjoys spending time with her daughter, husband, and dog. She enjoys traveling, photography, party planning, and anything design related.

Happy LOVE Day!!!

One of my favorite color combinations is pink and red. It is often reserved for Valentine's Day because it reflects the colors of love so well. Sometimes we get caught up in "what traditionally is" that great opportunities are missed. Pink and red are clean, crisp, bold colors that I would love to see used in decor year round.

By adjusting the shade or tone of a color you can change the entire look of a color combination. When you think of red, white and blue does your mind automatically go to the Fourth of July? With just a small adjustment of the blue you use you could have a completely different look, like this:

And of course, red and green go well together and not just for Christmas. By using a lime green and adding some other citrus colors you can get a bold combo for any time of the year.

Never be afraid of playing around with colors and creating new and unique combinations. A great way to do this is to visit a paint store and look through the paint chips, holding them up against each other and mixing and matching.

The areas I service are from the Lakeshore to Lansing, all of Mid Michigan. I will travel out of state if asked. I am located north of Battle Creek, in the Hickory Corners area.

I have been in the wedding biz over 22 years I managed a high end bridal store for 15 years. I did design work on the side as a hobby. It really started to take off and so did my dream of becoming a wedding floral designer so I ran with it 7 years ago quit my job and started my dream, Park Place Design!

4. What do you think sets you apart from other vendors in the industry?

My designs are set apart from the rest as I am very trendy and know what the bride is looking for. The days of babies breath and ferns are OUT. The fun new way to look at flowers is in. I know my brides loved my work when they write me letters and send me amazing photos.

5. Is there anything that you specialize in?

I am into reusing, recycling, and reducing my carbon foot print. I also bring that into my work. I compost all greens not used, I grow all my own herbs and succulents that I use in my wedding work. I feel really good about it.

6. When you’re not busy working, how do you like to spend your downtime?

In my down time I am a busy mom of 4 wonderful kids my oldest is at college, my youngest being in 1st grade and a 17, and 9 year old, I have NO down time. But I love to craft, scrap book and I also enjoy helping in my kids' class rooms. I must admit though, I do spend a lot of time promoting Park Place Design!

1. What type of services do you offer?

Steven F. Fox Photography is a full service photography studio specializing in weddings and modern portraiture. We offer a wide variety of coverage for weddings including both one and two photographer packages and digital and album packages. As a husband and wife team we are able to offer two very different styles and perspectives. We love working together and do our best work as a team.

2. Where are you located and what area do you service?

We are located in Holland, MI and are available for travel worldwide. We photograph most of our weddings in West Michigan but are frequently in Detroit and Chicago with some other fun destinations on occasion as well. We love exploring new places and are excited to be photographing a wedding on Mackinaw Island and a wedding in Mexico this year.

3. How long have you been business? How and why did you get started?

After being a photography major in college Steve spent years in Detroit photographing in the automotive industry. Steve moved to West Michigan when we got married and after a few years off decided it was time to get back to doing what he is passionate about. We photographed our first wedding together in April of 2006 and have loved building our business together.

4. What do you think sets you apart from other vendors in the industry?

I’m not sure that this sets us apart so much but it is what makes us so good at what we do – we really, really love what we do! We love meeting brides and grooms for the first time and talking with them about their wedding day. We love hearing stories of how couples met, how they became engaged and what they have planned for the future. I think Steve and I both still get tears in our eyes at least a few times every wedding season. We understand that having a connection with a couple we are photographing will allow us to get the most creative and intimate photographs because they trust us.

5. Is there anything that you specialize in?

We specialize in exceeding expectations. Over the last several years we have learned that one of the most important things we can do is talk with our clients about their expectations. We will always do our very best to capture every special moment and create beautiful portraits but if we are not aware of our clients ideas and dreams then it is impossible to meet their expectations. We like to tell our clients that if they want a photograph of the bride on a white horse on the beach at sunset that they need to provide the white horse, the beach and the sunset and we’ll do the rest.

6. When you’re not busy working, how do you like to spend your downtime?

Whenever we can we pack up and head north for some quality family time. Working from home is a huge blessing but the downside is that the work is always there. Up north there is no computer and no stack of papers to deal with so we can relax and enjoy each other. Steve is also a fabulous cook and loves trying new recipes. I am not a fabulous cook but I’m a willing guinea pig.

A job interview, a first date, meeting the in-laws, first impressions are an important part of showing who you really are. When planning your wedding you are often concerned about the overall look of the day, the atmosphere that your guests will experience but what will be the first impression they get leading up to the big day? This is where your wedding invitation and save the date come into play.

The intial impression your guests will form of your wedding will be when they receive your save the date or invitation (if not doing a save the date). Whether your wedding is going to be formal or casual, on the beach or in a country club, all of this will be relayed through your invitation. Yes, the wording is important but the complete look of the invite is especially important to portray your big day.

I love opening invitations, either wedding or other special event, and getting excited for the event because of the look of the stationery. It is a little sneak peek into what the hosts are planning for the event (color scheme, style, location) and helps build the anticipation.

When planning your wedding day, make sure you consider the design of your invitation and other stationery product. It is a wonderful way to pull your entire event together and give your guests a glimpse into your plans.

It is amazing how social media has helped link professionals in the wedding industry together. I learned of DJ Poppy from Facebook and through this blog will introduce you to him as well. I have not had the opportunity to work with DJ Poppy yet but if you are looking for a DJ add him to your list to check out.

1. What type of services do you offer?

DJ Poppy brings the music to your party. I have mobile sound equipment for small (about 30 people) and large (about 300 people) rooms with lights that move with the music. I prepare a playlist of your choice of songs for the event and pick the next song to match the mood of the moment.

2. Where are you located and what area do you service?

I work from home in Holland and like to cover western Michigan, from Saugatuck to Grand Haven to Lowell and all places in that area.

3. How long have you been business? How and why did you get started?

My wife reminded me that I was the DJ at our wedding party in 1974. I have played music since the ‘70s, from vinyl records, acetate tape and computer discs, for friends and family at birthday, wedding and retirement parties. I took on the “DJ Poppy” role and purchased my current equipment for my daughter’s wedding in August 2008, then moved from northern New Jersey to Holland in December 2008.

4. What do you think sets you apart from other vendors in the industry?

My experience in playing music and passionate study of popular culture go with my age. I’m from the Baby Boom generation, nearly a 60-year-old hippie. Although I like to sing along, I can perform songs with horns, guitars and percussion instruments. And I play your music at your volume; some DJs turn a deaf ear to requests for personal themes and will not lower or raise the volume level.

5. Is there anything that you specialize in?

I love to listen and play funk, reggae and ska. But my specialty as a DJ is your themes and preferences in music. I appreciate variety and work hard at picking the next song.

6. When you’re not busy working, how do you like to spend your downtime?

Poppy, or Bruce Cooke, is really a grandfather. I am retired from 35 years of teaching high school mathematics, so I can do what I like. At this point in my life, every day is a “snow day,” an extra vacation with its own adventure. I go drag racing in my 1971 Dodge Charger in the summer, I play with bar bands on Saturday nights, I play with the praise team in church on Sundays, I fix things around the house and usually have a student to tutor during the week. Many people come to the Lakeshore for a vacation, but I live here. I’m having a party every day.

1) How long have you been in business? Provide your background/history.

Events by I.Candy was started in April 2009 by Jill Childs & Alicia Lutz, a mother, daughter team. Jill & Alicia draw from more that 30 years of graphic & interior design, fabrication, printing and photography backgrounds to help redefine event planning. Our background & experience is what makes us so unique. Jill is the owner of a graphics company that prints all of our fabrics, printed materials (invitations, programs, escort cards, table numbers, etc.) and does all of our fabrication, such as, our lampshades, custom routered lettering, floor monogramming and much more.

2) How many weddings do you typically do each year?

Events by I.Candy began in April 2009. In 2010 we will touch over 100 weddings or events.

We hope to double that number in 2011.

3) How many weeks, months, years in advance does someone need to book your services?

Events by I. Candy can work in any time frame. We have many brides that come in a year in advance. We are currently working with brides that still need to finish the decor styling of their weddings in September & October (of this year). We also have brides that come in for a few special pieces that can’t be found anywhere else...we have had brides come in a few days to a few weeks before their event. At Events, it is very easy for us to react quickly because all of our decor is in our own inventory and stored locally.

4) What sets you apart?

What makes us so unique? We are truly passionate about our work! We know how to set the tone for your entire event....no matter your budget. We can coordinate the table dressings to your invitations to your centerpieces to virtually everything! The tiniest details are what makes your event unforgettable. At Events by I.Candy, we rent everything that a bride will need for the decor styling of her wedding. We have over 220 different kinds of vases...in every imaginable shape, size and color. Our showroom is packed with a bride’s dreams...you can feel their excitement when they enter our showroom. We have large pieces, high quality silk and floral balls, bouquets and much more.

5) What is your price range?

A bride can do a centerpiece from $10 to whatever they want to create. They can rent bouquets for their wedding party from $3 to $7. We can create a wedding on a very limited budget to whatever they can imagine and beyond.

6) Why would a bride/groom want to choose you over others?

I think the question is why would you choose anyone else? We have it all! You can rent it and return it! It really is that simple and easy!

7) What can you offer a budget savvy bride/groom in this economy?

Everything. We have lots of budget-friendly decor. We ask a bride/groom what their budget is. She can create custom, but very affordable centerpieces and decor. We know how to create an event on a very small budget as well as a large budget event.

8) What should couples consider when deciding whether or not to hire your company?

A couple should weigh all the factors...should I rent my decor or buy it? Should we rent silk flowers or spend a higher budget on real flowers? Events by I.Candy has all of our decor on display in our showroom. A bride can come in and we will put together arrangements while she is there. They can participate in the creation of their event. Why would you buy when you can rent?

Christmas Wedding

In the wedding industry the wedding "season" is most generally considered from May to October. The Fall months are just beginning to get hot, not literally, although Al Gore may disagree with that. In Michigan, especially, we are seeing a large increase in September and October wedding dates. One thing we do not see many of are Winter weddings, my one question is....why? What is more romantic than warm candlelight on a cold winter night?

I love the idea of having a wedding around Christmas time. There are a few ways that this time of year could even save you money. Having the right venue you may even be able to save on decorations. A venue like Frederick Meijer Gardens decorates the facility for their annual Christmas exhibit, all you would need to do is set out some centerpieces and you would be good to go. Or if you plan far enough in advance it would be very easy to purchase your decorations the year before, after Christmas, at a considerable discount.

There are many fun things you could incorporate from the season as the favors to your guests. A few ideas are small ornaments that your guests can use each year and remember the wonderful time they had at your wedding, peppermint bark or gingerbread cookies, cute tins with hot chocolate mix in them and your logo on the top.

Fun ideas to consider for your Christmas wedding:

Have your guests place gifts under a decorated Christmas tree instead of a table, hopefully they will even wrap them in seasonal giftwrap.
Name your tables after popular Christmas songs or if you have a small enough guest list use the items from "Twelve Days of Christmas"
Hire a Santa to have your guests pictures taken with
If your venue allows visitors on the grounds, hire a horse and sleigh to give rides
Send your centerpieces home with one lucky person from each table at the end of the night for them to use for their holiday parties

1. What type of services do you offer?

At March 27 Designs, I offer custom design services for wedding invitations. This means that I try to make the invitation as personal and unique as possible! When meeting with brides, I want to learn everything I can about their wedding and vision so that I can accurately create a design that beautifully introduces their dream, and is uniquely theirs.

2. Where are you located and what area do you service?

March 27 Designs is located near downtown Grand Rapids, and I provide invitation design consultations via email or phone wherever your wedding destination might be! I also love to meet brides in person in the Holland and Grand Rapids areas.

3. How long have you been business? How and why did you get started?

My passion is making things beautiful, but it hasn’t always been invitations.

I grew up actively participating in various forms of art and design, and it was my love for helping others that led me to obtain my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Health Communication. After three years of working for the local hospital, however, I discovered I was not able to fulfill my dreams in that setting and slowly began to see that design projects for friends and family were my breath of fresh air.

It was about a year ago that March 27 Designs was born. My husband had proposed and I had begun to work on invitation design for my own March 27, 2010 wedding.

4. What do you think sets you apart from other vendors in the industry?

A lot of invitation companies are customizable within certain boundaries. My husband and I found this out first hand when shopping for our invitations… We loved the style, but it didn’t come in our color. Or the color was perfect, but we were looking for something with more pizzazz.

At March 27 Designs, I want to reflect your style and your wedding! No cookie cutter invitations, please! I will often take two to three elements from a wedding and weave them into the invitation design to reflect the dream behind the event. Is your favorite part the elegance that a chandelier brings to your reception hall? The simplicity of the flower on your dress? That color that effortlessly describes the tone of your affair? Whatever it is that makes the bride smile, I will do my best to uncover her dream and create a work of art that they will love to share with their guests.

5. Is there anything that you specialize in?

March 27 Designs started out as a full service design studio, taking your invitation through design, printing, and assembly. But eventually we began to see that many brides today want to assemble their own invitations—whether it is to save money or just to experience the process.

That’s when we began to specialize in custom design work that the bride can take to a printer or print at home, and then assemble with family and friends.

Believe it or not, assembling invitations can be a fun part of the process… as long as you have the kinks worked out! Stress usually comes from unexpected problems that arise when you don’t have all of the information that you need. You’d be surprised by how many brides want that special embellishment, and then end up in tears when they go to the post office and learn how much that “bump” is going to cost them… That’s just one example of why I try my hardest to give you all of the information that you need to take your invitation from design to the post office—without the unexpected problems that can arise from never having done something like this before.

After I send you your design, I’m not going to disappear off of the face of the earth! I will provide you with the information and support that you need to send off your invitations without a glitch.

6. When you’re not busy working, how do you like to spend your downtime?

Right now, I am learning how to cook! My husband, Matthew, is hoping I will make great strides in this area (let’s just say he’s graciously eaten a lot of burnt, overly-seasoned, and just plain messed up food in our 8 months of marriage!). My biggest challenge aside from cooking would have to be training my five-month-old Bichon-Poodle puppy named Lexie. She is my fuzzy princess and I love her to pieces… even when she chews on things that she shouldn’t! I love hanging out with family and friends and am hoping to do lots of ice skating and exploring of downtown Grand Rapids this winter.

I offered to run some errands and pick up some last minute items for a client and on the list were paper cones for the tossing rose petals. Easy enough I thought, I'll just go to Hobby Lobby or Michaels and pick some up. Ummm...nope! My mom and I were out one day and looked everywhere! We even started just looking for anything that we could make into cones, I was getting very frustrated. A couple of days later my mom called from the parking lot of Walmart saying "she thinks she found something that would work". Walmart carries a line of Wilton cake supplies including...10" white grease proof doilies with a lace like die cut edge. My mom is brilliant!!!

There are 10 doilies per package for $1.98, so out of one package you can get 20 cones. For this wedding we only needed 40 so it cost us under $4!

Step 1: Cut the doilies in half to make 20

Step 2: Roll each half into a cone shape, there is a smooth side and a rough side of the pattern, I rolled it with the rough side facing in. After a couple you will figure out the trick to getting the edges to line up.

Step 3: Tape or glue stick the edges, both inside and out. I used a small piece of double sided tape on the top corner where the pattern is because there isn't a lot to hold glue there.

Step 4: Fill with flower petals of your choice!

Anniversary Journal

A few years ago I bought a journal. The title on the front says "Cherished Hopes, Treasured Dreams". It is a pretty book with a quote on every few pages like: "Recall it as often as you wish, a happy memory never wears out." - Libbie Fudim. The purpose of this journal was to record Derek and I's marriage so that someday when our children and grandchildren wanted to have that history it would be all written down for them. My goal was to write in it on every anniversary and tell about the past year in our life together. A wonderful and beautiful goal, I believed and still do.

I just came across this journal again while organizing and when I flipped it open I noticed I have only recorded one year of our seven together. At first it made me sad, then I wondered why this is and I think that every time I come across the journal it isn't our anniversary so I set it aside until the next year. What a stupid thought! Just because it's not the exact date of our wedding doesn't mean I can't reminisce about the year that has just past us.

Do you do anything special to document your years together? Maybe this would be a great thing to begin on your honeymoon together. Reminisce about the wedding and talk about your goals for the future.

Local Wedding Wednesday

When I received these submissions for the Local Wedding Wednesday post, I couldn't help but give them their very own post. Pretty sure my absolute LOVE for fall had an influence on this decision! My husband and I were married in late September and I sure wish I had amazing pictures like this to reflect the beautiful autumn day that we had.

Kate Morrow did a fantastic job on these and I must also comment on the bride's gorgeous bouquet, hair and wrap, stunning!!

Special "Extras"

When planning your wedding it is common to try and stretch your budget as far as it will go. And when doing so sometimes you have to sacrifice some of the "extras". If you are able to squeeze a little or a lot more out of your budget, here are a few fun things to consider.

Signature Cocktails: Have a Signature Drink either served during the cocktail hour or available all night at the bar, it adds a great twist to the evening. One bride who was using pink and green for her colors had a alcoholic pink lemonade served with a lime in the glass, just one more way to incorporate your overall theme throughout the event.

Late Night Snack: You know your guests better than anyone else. Are they the kind of crowd that will dance all night? If so, bring out a late night snack. Pizza, nachos, or even milk and cookies make a great snack for your guests and will give them that little boost to make it to the last song of the night.

Cappuccino & Smoothie Bar: There is a Michigan business called Cappuccino Man, it is a gourmet coffee cart that offers espresso, cappuccino, chai tea and natural fruit smoothies. This would be a unique addition during cocktail hour or to have rolled out after dinner.

Cigar Rolling Station: Yes, really. There are business' that come to events and have professional rollers that will roll the cigars right in front of the guests. They even have personalized cigar bands that you can put your wedding logo or other graphics on.

Fireworks: Want a grand finale to your wedding day? Hire a licensed professional to light off fireworks at the end of your reception. Most companies charge for the size of fireworks and also the amount of time you want them going. Just make sure to check with your venue that this is permissible and purchase any permits you may need before the event.

Big or small, adding a little extra special touch will have your guests remembering your reception for a very long time.

Being Well "Groomed"

I posted this last year on the Memorable Events blog but thought it was cute enough to share again.

I recently read an article by Peter Scott author of "Well Groomed". The article included tips that every groom should know before he (tries to) helps his bride plan their wedding. Thought they should be shared...

1. Don't freak out if your bride puts a zillion items on your gift registry. Remember: Unlike that weird lamp you got from Aunt Zelda, registry gifts can be returned.

2. Just because you know someone in a band, it doesn't mean that group should play at your wedding.

3. It's nice if your best man is a good friend, but it's even more important that he be reliable.

4. If your bride and her mom have a disagreement about a wedding planning details, always side with your bride.

5. The fact that you've never met someone doesn't count as a good reason for not inviting him/her to the wedding.

6. If your bride has a mini-meltdown during the planning, just give her a hug and tell her everything's right on schedule (even if that's a lie).

7. Try on your ring before the wedding day to be sure it fits. You don't want to be combing the ballroom floor at 3 am because your ring slipped off.

8. Whatever amount you've budgeted for the booze, add 20 percent. And then another 50 percent. Now you've got an accurate number.

9. If you don't own a tux, consider buying one. It will look nice, smell nice, and actually fit. (And no matter what it costs, it will be cheaper than your bride's dress).

10. If you're writing your own vows, make sure your bride isn't speaking for 20 minutes when all you've come up with is, "You're awesome baby".

11. No matter where or when you take a honeymoon, call ahead and have a bottle of champagne waiting in the hotel room.

12. If you have friends who are guaranteed to make inappropriate toasts, don't pass around the microphone at the rehearsal dinner. In fact, why are those friends even at the rehearsal dinner?

I think my favorite for sure is #10, too funny!

Holland Historical Venues

If you are looking for intimate unique venues for wedding ceremonies, receptions, cocktail parties, showers or all of the above take a look at the Holland Museums. There are multiple venues available, the Holland Museum, the Armory and the Cappon House and Visitors Center. All are rich in history and would turn your party into an event. In addition to your rental fee you are given the opportunity for you and your guests to tour the building and exhibits during the time of your event. Renters are allowed to bring in their own caterer or to choose from a list provided by the rental coordinator. Bar service is also allowed on site.

The Museum lobby can hold up to 150 for a stand up cocktail/appetizer reception or around 40-50 for a sit down reception. The Museum is directly across the street from Centennial Park which has a gazebo perfect for ceremonies and then your guests could walk right over to the reception.

The Cappon House and Visitors Center is lovely for an outdoor ceremony and a tented reception. There is a nice porch/front entrance that is a nice backdrop for the ceremony and there is plenty of lawn space for smaller tents. Inside there are a few rooms available for public use. The dining room can handle a sit down dinner or luncheon for 24 or a stand-up reception for 40.

The Armory building has recently undergone some renovations so the pictures on their site are outdated. They have opened up the ceiling and have redone the floor to get away from the gymnasium look. The Armory can hold up to 500 people for a sit down reception but would also be a good site for a trade show, fundraiser or some other event where you would need a lot of room to spread out.
